Middle School Dedication and Open House (NEW)

The Hancock Public Schools held a Dedication Ceremony on January 16, 2010, for the new Middle School Building.
 
Hancock Public School Superintendent and Middle School Principal Monica Healy, welcomed the School Board, Construction company representatives, and the public. Former Superintendent Gorden Barkell spoke of the early school facilities, and the efforts to provide new modern facilities. John Vaara, immediate past Superintendent, also spoke of the School system’s gratitude to the citizens of Hancock who voted for and supported the three bond issues that provided the new facilities since 1987. Dale Kero, Hancock Public Schools Board of Education President, also thanked everybody for their support, and the Middle School Teachers, employees, and volunteers who worked hard over the Christmas break to get moved into the new building in time for class startup
The Middle School Chorus gave several renditions. Board President Dale Kero officially presents Superintendent Monica Healy with the keys to the building. These Middle School students, representing the student body, got to cut the Ribbon officially opening the new building, adjacent to and attached to the Hancock High Schoo. An Open House followed the ceremonies. PREVIOUSLY....> A new Middle School is under construction in Hancock, following a May, 2008 school bond affirmative vote.Late October saw further construction completion, as here in this SE corner view. Much of the outside work is now nearing completion.
Here, the main portion of the new building is about finished, and is now closed in. Inside work also has progressed to the final phases, and is on schedule for habitation by students after the Christmas break And the new Soccer Field/practice football field, and Track are having finishing touches put on, along with final grading and sodding. [EARLIER....] Part of the bonding issue was slated for a roof replacement on the now 20 year old Barkell Grade School Building, on Elevation Street. The building’s new roof is shown here. This view shows the newer addition, with both new roofs visible. MJO Contracting was the contractor with Wuebben Construction as the sub through MJO.
The new Middle School, by early September, North side. And the new practice field and running track is also beginning to take shape. By the end of September, the South end of the new School is nearing outside work completion. The North side is also moving toward being totally closed in.
The new Field has really moved along, with goal posts up, new sod installed, and the running track has been completed and paved. Also, a new utility garage has been built on the West side. PREVIOUSLY... Preliminary ground work began late last Fall following a ground breaking ceremony in October. Work ceased during the winter, but by mid summer, walls were up. Here, the SE corner of the new building. The project is the cornerstone of an $8.9 million expenditure. This early July view of the west facing portion of the building, which is attached to a recently constructed High School. Included is a new football practice field incorporated with an 8 lane Track and Field complex, just to the west of the High School. The current Middle School (the former High School, circa 1923) will be taken over by Finlandia University.
By early August, work has progressed in the SE view. A view from the west. The new building will open to students following the Christmas break. The Track and Football field take shape. Condon Field will continue to be the main playing field, which will undergo major reconstruction itself, by ne proprietor Finlandia University, following the end of this football season.
