2014 Barnelopet Races

For the 7th year, the Barnelopet Children's Ski Races were held Sunday, Feb 8th, at the Maasto Hiihto Cross Country Ski Trails in Hancock. Sponsored by the Sons of Norway (Ulseth Lodge) of Hancock, the Races are a non-competitive event to help foster interest in cross country skiiing and physical exercise in general.

The sign up crew gets ready for the End of Race activities, after registering a good contingent of young racers, in the Mastto Hihto Trails Chalet, in Hancock A view from near the starting line, of the Chalet, Hancock Driving Park, and the Houghton County Fairgrounds. The 6 km. Race gets underway. This is the longest of the four races today. Here, the slightly younger and smaller racers, start out on the 4 Km. Course.
As the ages go downward, the Race course gets shorter. This is the 2 km. Course start. And finally, these tykes take on the 1 km. Race course. Conditions were a bit windy, with temperatures in the mid teens. A happy Nora Kirkpatrick, age 8, of Houghton, receives her Sons of Norway Barnelopet Medal for successfully completing today’s race course.
