Third Annual Barnelopet Ski Races
February 7, 2010
The 2010 Barnelopet (Norwegian for Children’s Races) was held on Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Maasto Hiihto Ski Trails in Hancock.

Registration begins at 1pm at the Chalet, in the Hancock Fairgrounds, and is for youths from 3 to 17 years of age. This youth is raring to go, on a beautiful sunny winter day, with temperatures in the high 20s. Races began at 2pm, with 4 “classes” of races, by distance, and by experience. Here, the longest distance, the start of the 6 kilometer race. Here the 4 K race begins. The event is sponsored by the Sons of Norway, (Lodge 5-670), Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club, Portage Health Systems, and the City of Hancock. While times will be kept, the race is more in fun, than competitive, and teaches youngsters at an early age that skiing can be great fun and exercise.
The 2 K gets under way. The event continues to grow gradually each year, according to Wayne Stordahl, Sons of Norway President. There is no charge for entry. This young skier gets a little help and support from Mommie And the 1 K starts. All the youngsters received a Norwegian Medallion, and everyone had some hot chocolate and cookies following the last race event. For more info, see the link below.
