April 1, 2010
Finlandia University recently held a Steeple Cross and Lights Dedication Ceremony in the University Chapel.

University Chaplain Soren Schmidt welcomed the attendees on behalf of the University, and delivered the opening Scripture and Prayer. Finlandia President Phillip Johnson spoke to the crowd about the donation from Edward amd Elaine Hautala that made the Cross and Lighting possible. Andrea Hautala McAleenan (L) and Karen Hautala Richards, representing their parents, view with Chaplain Schmidt a special Dedication acknowledgment plaque that will hang in a place of honor in the University Chapel. And the new Steeple Cross, high above the Chapel, which is lighted at night as well. PREVIOUSLY ... Finlandia Homecoming ...
Finlandia University, in Hancock, celebrated their 2010 Homecoming in February, with a number of campus events, including Bon Fires, Tugs of War, and sports events.Besides Men’s and Women’s Varsity Basketball games against St. Norbert College and Gogebic Community College, respectively, a pair of weekend varsity Hockey games were played against Lawrence University. Here, Finlandia’s Lions goal tender makes a save in the first period, with FU leading 2-1. The Lions take the action to Lawrence’s end, with a shot from the far side that misses the net, but is shot back out to No. 8 from the corner, who sees an open net. And the opportunity isn’t wasted, as he slams the puck home past the out of position goaltender and defender to make the Lions lead 3-1. The cheerleaders and the Lions congratulate No. 8.
A group of happy Homecoming Cheerleaders. The Lions would pull out a 5-4 win in Over Time, on Friday night. And a happy Finlandia Lion mascot works up the fans. The Lions play their games at the Houghton County (Multipurpose) Arena, which is also the venue for the Hancock High Bulldogs.[
