2024-2025 Transit Survey
December 3, 2024, Houghton and Hancock, Michigan. – The City of Houghton and the City of Hancock, with funding from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), are conducting a survey to gather public input for their transportation service plan. The service plan will result from realistic evaluation of the future demand for public transportation and to see if the city systems in Houghton and Hancock can operate more efficiently or be merged.
The project started in October 2024 and is expected to take about a year to complete (October 2025). The study team will be conducting survey and community outreach efforts starting in January 2025 and moving into spring. A mail-back survey will be mailed to households in the area in early January. Approximately 10,000 surveys will be mailed. While the purpose of the survey is to provide good information for the study, it is also an opportunity to educate others, recruit new students into the profession, and to promote awareness of public transportation issues in the community.
Survey questions will focus on need for public transportation, residents’ awareness of the existing service, and the level of support for public transit funding.
Public meetings and other outreach activities are anticipated for spring and early summer.
