City of Hancock Parks

Hancock Beach

Location: Hancock Beach, located on Portage Lake, is our premier destination for recreation in the City of Hancock. Hancock Beach is connected by footpaths to our Campground and has a beautiful, sandy beach.

Amenities: The Park at Hancock Beach has a new recreation pier with swimming platform, fishing area and kayak launch. The pavilion is available for rent for events and includes a prepping area with refrigerator and electric power. Restrooms and changing facilities are available near the pavilion. 

There is a privately run concession stand that sells beverages and snacks, ice cream and paddleboard and kayak rentals. There are picnic tables at the pavilion, near the concession stand and scatterd throughout the park. Benches are also widely available. There are a limited number of grills available for public use.

Hancock Beach hosts three sand volleyball courts with nets. The playground has climbing and sliding structures, swing sets, including ADA swings for children.

Hancock Dog Park

Location: The Hancock Dog Park is located north of the Hancock Driving Park. The Park is presently under construction and will be open officially in the spring of 2022.

Amenities: Upon completion, the Hancock Dog Park will have separate fenced-in areas for small and for large dogs, sheltered benches, dog stations and access to drinking water for dogs.

Hancock Driving Park

Location: The Hancock Driving Park is located north of the Houghton County Arena at 1500 Birch Street. The Driving Park once hosted horse races and other events in the early 1900’s. The Driving Park has been the site of the Houghton County Fair for over 70 years.

Amenities: The Driving Park has three fenced-in ball fields, both hard ball and softball. The Finlandia Lions practice and play their home games there. There is a playground structure near the Little League Field. Each field has bleachers for viewing games.

The Driving Park is also the home of the Four Seasons Chalet, a heated building with restrooms for use of events. It is the base of operations for the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Trail during their events.

Klondike Park

Location: Klondike Park, located at the corner of Crestwood Drive and Poplar Street, is the former site of the City of Hancock water tower.

Amenities: The Park is the site of a new playground structure. A gazebo will be added to the park in 2022. Additional amenities will be added in the future.

Laurn-Grove Park

Location: Laurn-Grove Park, located between Emery and Roberts Streets and borders the DNR trail. It is a large space with multiple amenities and is used year-round. Laurn-Grove Park was dedicated in January, 1947 to honor Alvin Laurn and Robert Grove, two Hancock boys who died at sea in World War II. Laurn-Grove Park had many successful hockey teams through the years and generations of children have skated there.

Amenities: The north side of Laurn-Grove offers an outdoor rink and a heated warming shelter in winter. The rink is used for basketball and ball hockey in summer. The park has two playground structures, a swing set and benches. On the south side of the park, there is a fenced tennis court with both tennis and pickle ball markings. An upgrade to the court is pending in the spring of 2022.

Montezuma Park

Location: Montezuma Park is located south of Hancock Avenue on Montezuma Street.

Amenities: Montezuma Park offers a new playground structure for younger children and a swing set. There is a garden in the center of the park which was built as a tribute to gold star families and a stone sofa built in the 1930’s by the Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. A staircase from the south end of the park takes you down to the DNR trail and connects to the waterway.

Memorial Park

Location: Memorial Park is located on Quincy Street directly across from City Hall. The granite memorial recognizes those Hancock residents who died in World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam Wars. The new metal monument recognizes the five branches of the United States Military. Memorial Park is the site of our annual Christmas Tree lighting.

Amenities: Memorial Park offers a contemplative space with benches and picnic tables. The park also has a drinking fountain available for use in the summer.

Pine Park

Location: Pine Park is just off Hwy 41 on the corner of Pine Street and S. Elevation.

Amenities: It is a well shaded, partially fenced park with a playground structure, a picnic table and park bench.

Porvoo Park

Location: Porvoo Park is located on the beautiful Portage Canal waterfront on Navy Street.

Amenities: Porvoo Park offers a pavilion which can be rented for events. The boardwalk meanders from the pavilion toward the Ramada Hotel with picnic tables and benches available for use. The park also offers a swing set and two herb hardens for public use. The park has public restrooms, a bicycle rack and a bike fix-it station and is close access to the DNR trail.

Terrace Park

Location: Terrace Park in historic east Hancock is located off Dunstan Street.

Amenities: The park offers a new tennis court, a playground structure and swings, picnic tables and benches. There is also an area still used for pickup baseball games. The basketball court will be refurbished in 2022.

Third Street Park

Location: Third Street Park is north of Hwy 41 off Third Street. It offers a variety of cover with some trees for shade.

Amenities: Third Street Park offers a new playground structure, a swing set, a basketball court, park benches and a sheltered picnic table.
