GE Aviation Expands to Houghton/Hancock
January 28, 2008
GE Aviation held a Grand Opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, for their 15,000 square foot facility in the Power House Building, on January 28, 2008.
A view of the newly expanded and updated Power House. Welcoming all the dignitaries, was MTU Enterprise Corporation Smart Zone C.E.O. Carlton Crothers. The new facility will add 50 new jobs to the Copper Country. Acting as Master of Ceremonies was GE Aviation's Director of Engineering Systems, Don Eenigenburg. A $1 million grant by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, along with a nearly equal amount infused by GE Aviation, helped to renovate (for the second time in the past 5 years) and expand the building. State Representative Mike Lahti spoke of the benefits and the support from the State of Michigan.
Also welcoming GE Aviation to the Communities was Hancock Mayor Barry Givens. Speaking on behalf of MTU was President Glenn D. Mroz, who addressed the benefits for MTU and it's students, a number of whom will work as interns and/or part time employees, working on software development, verification and validation, mechanical design, and hardware design, for the aerospace industry. And last, but not least, a ribbon was cut, symbolically opening the new facility. GE Aviation originally started operations in the Smart Zone facilities in the Portage Campus building in Hancock.
